HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATE!

I love Birthdays! Sometime during the day I think about what it would be like if the Birthday girl or boy hadn’t been born and I say a little thank you in my head for the chance to celebrate. Not a big hootin and hollerin kind of thing, just reflection. So, Kate’s birthday is no different, but in addition, she is ‘the baby’ and she is now 17!!! Now that is cause for celebration; in the words of the Black Eyed Peas – It’s going to be a good, good night – I can feel it! Wish Dave and Nina were here for the festivities. They’ll be balloons and presents and the traditional birthday tablecloth. And oh yes, cupcakes!

Happy Holidays and our new Family Member

We hope that everyone is having a wonderful holiday! It’s been an extremely busy December as we finished our last Christmas deadline orders.

It’s great to have all of our kids home – Nina arrived this past week and Dave just squeaked in between storms yesterday. Kate finally has a day off from school and work.

We’re excited to have a new member of our family – Lola, a Boston Terrier. I was pretty distraught after Jack, our labrador retriever passed away and it took a year until we were ready to bring a new puppy into the household.

Lola is SO cute and is settling in life at the Barry’s house after a very rough ride from the breeder’s. She seems to be so smart, plays hard and then crashes in your arms. She made it through the night without crying or snoring too much. We’re very excited.

We’re thinking of all of you and hope that you’re enjoying some time with your family. We send along our heartfelt wishes for a healthy and happy new year.

Today is our son Dave’s 22nd birthday! I reminisce through photos every year and thought that I would share a few of my favorite moments. Happy Birthday Dave, we wish you much happiness today and always! Love you lots.

Cana Films

We hit the point on Tuesday morning when Barb and I realized that we needed to step away from the computer and just get some fresh air. It must have been karma – not 5 minutes later I got an email from Marco and Jenny, owners of Cana Films (good friends and super creative wedding videographers) that they were heading downtown for a bike ride.

We had a great ride – Millvale to the Southside, down to Station Square, back to the South Side for lunch at Kassab’s and then a bit of a hairy ride down Grant street to the Strip for Espresso at La Prima’s.

Fun, fun, fun!!

Heritage Trail – Ohiopyle to Confluence

We recently took a bike trip along the Youghiogheny River Trail from Ohiopyle to Confluence and a hike along the Laurel Highlands Trail. The weather was perfect, the workout was just enough and the views were spectacular with a hint of fall color. We ended the day with lunch at the FireFly Grill in Ohiopyle. Except for a near miss with a rattlesnake, we couldn’t have asked for a better trip!!

Here is my latest piece of cellphone ‘art’. I drive past this view of the new Children’s Hospital every night on my way to pick up Kate’s carpool from rowing in Millvale. On more than one occasion I have noticed the sun shining only on the hospital – it glows like fire.

Double Caution Crossing

I am making a habit of taking a few photographs a week from my cellphone. They are a bit random, but it is surprising the things that I am starting to see because I am looking for an interesting shot.

Take this image for example. I mean seriously, what are the chances of my being stopped at a traffic light and seeing this perfectly placed banana peel? Many thanks to this litterbug.

We’ll see how long this exercise lasts. If I start posting images of the computer keyboard or my rolodex, you can write to me and ask me to stop. Or at the very least, to please go outside for a little while for a change of scenery.

First Contact

We got a very unexpected phone call from Dave, our first contact with him since he left September 5th for a 2-month long trip with Outward Bound. Upon completion, he will receive certifications for kayaking and rafting and a wilderness ‘first responder’ ranking as well.

His group stopped briefly in Moab, Utah for showers and ‘real food’ this past weekend. They cook for themselves daily with food that they are carrying on a supply raft, so their first stop this weekend was a grocery store, second stop – a restaurant. For the most part, they are in an area of the country so remote that any communication they have for emergencies is by satellite telephone – if it works.

They spent the first 1/2 of the trip on the water, kayaking and whitewater rafting. They will be on dry land for the next week and a half for intensive wilderness first aid – before heading back the the river.

Dave is loving every minute of the adventure, even downplaying his side trip to the ER for a torn shoulder muscle that happened during kayak rolling drills.
